Skullptures

What can really be said about this series of work? I will do my best to try and explain. It all started with a small collection of local animal skulls, some found and others given to me. I started experimenting with cans of spray foam which served as a form of bonding medium.

The first experiment in this series consisted of several different types of mammal skull fragments which were then connected with foam to depict a more hideous creation, a sort of Franken-skull if you like.

Later on, I began incorporating my late grandfather’s rusty tools and old car parts into the skulls and foam, which later became my American Gothic Series / West Virginia 3-D collages. This series then evolved further by replacing the older, rustic items with more modern-day appliances.

I don’t really consider myself a sculptor, bit more of a 3d collage experimentalist.  These two categories are similar in techniques, but the materials used differ greatly.  The  first series is based around animal  skulls, and the next is composed of mainly toys and antlers.

Toys

I am guessing that you could probably perceive this the way I do – as a more playful set of cousins to the American Goth Series. These began with a lot of broken toys from my attic, and of course, cans of foam.  My goal was not only to create something fun to look at, but to show that even after multiple viewings, a new element could be discovered.
